Trip Journal- Day 11

Thursday, June 27, 2008

We took a little side-trip on our way to Anchorage yesterday and checked out the Matanuska Glacier. It’s the largest glacier in Alaska that is accessible by car. After driving a few miles off the road and hiking in just about 1000 feet, we were able to walk on the glacier. Very cool (no pun intended)!

We arrived in Anchorage last night around 5:30, had a nice, relaxing dinner, and headed back to The Golden Nugget RV Park to set up camp. Unfortunately, our first night in Anchorage didn’t turn out quite the way we had planned. We spent over 4 hours sitting in the Alaska Regional hospital, as Sarah suffered a nasty cut on her cheek when the wind caught the camper door and swung it into the side of her face. Thankfully the doctor was able to close it up with some nifty Dermabond glue rather than stitches, and she’s doing just fine now.

Today we tried to sleep in, as it was the first morning in the last 2 weeks that we didn’t have to hurry out of bed to pack up camp and continue driving- but about 6:05 a.m. little Grady James was WIDE AWAKE and ready to start the day. Ugh! We spent some time playing at a park and then headed to Chuck E Cheese to let the girls go crazy for awhile. We figure they deserved it after so many days of just sitting. We emptied out the disgustingly dirty car, gave it a good vacuum and wash, and then headed to have dinner with some old friends from flight school who have a home in nearby Eagle River.

We had a great time catching up with Rob and Christen, and the kids all enjoyed playing together. After dinner we got ready to take a hike down to the river near there home, and as we were standing on the sidewalk in front of their house, a mama moose and her two babies came trotting out from between a couple of houses, headed across several front lawns, down the street and took off toward the woods. What a scene!!!

We head to Homer in the morning, and as much fun as we’ve had along the way, I think we’ll all be glad to stop driving and hop on the ferry.
