Day 8

What a day! We made it to Mile 0 of the famous Alaska Highway in Dawson Creek, British Columbia yesterday morning. That is one of the huge milestones of this trip, and we were among many travelers posing for photos in front of the monument which marks the spot. This also marks the beginning of our favorite part of the trip- this area of British Columbia is magnificently beautiful, with mile after mile of completely unspoiled landscape. It’s truly hard to describe just how amazing it is…the photos simply don’t do it justice.
We saw 2 black bears munching alongside the road and were able to stop and watch them for quite awhile. The girls were really excited, but no one was as giddy about it as Jerod…that made the whole trip for him! The excitement didn’t stop there- after we stopped for the night at the Toad River Lodge, we were able to watch several moose feeding in the water directly behind our campsite. One in particular was very close, and I think thoroughly enjoyed the audience he had.
The girls are amazed to see snow on the mountain tops- and this was the first morning when everyone needed long pants and sweat shirts.
Shortly after leaving our campground this morning we came across a stone sheep on the side of a mountain. We stopped to take a picture and then realized there were actually two, and that hiding behind one of them was a little baby! Very cute. A little later on we passed a group of very large, very impressive looking bison resting alongside the road, and shortly after that we stumbled upon a rather personal encounter between 2 black bears….hysterically funny- the girls thought it was very cute that one of the bears was giving the other a “piggy back ride”! Thankfully they are all still very naïve about the ways of nature! (Gosh, I hope I don’t get into trouble for posting porn on the internet!!)
As we approached Watson Lake we saw a beautiful grizzly bear, but unfortunately we weren’t in a safe spot to stop, and by the time we could have pulled over, she had taken off up the hill and was in the woods.
Watson Lake was fun, the girls really enjoyed running around through the Signpost Forest and ridiculously, neither Jerod nor I thought to bring along a sign for us to hang. Next time, next time.
