Day 9
Tuesday, June 24, 2008
It was a fairly quiet night at the Johnson Crossing Campground near Teslin, Yukon. The mosquitoes were unbelievably thick, so Jerod and I doused ourselves with as much bug repellant as we could stand, got the camper set up, and then ran the girls in from the car. We cooked some burgers and the girls entertained themselves for at least an hour with a candy necklace-making kit that our old Traverse City neighbors, the Maleitzke’s, gave them for the trip.
We went to sleep at about 10:00 p.m. and it was just as bright outside as it is now, at 8:00 a.m.! I woke up at about 3:00 a.m. and I did have to push the little glow light on Jerod’s watch to read it, but it certainly wasn’t dark. I am really surprised at how well everyone is doing at night time. Even Grady has slept through the night each night in his little Pea Pod.
Speaking of Grady, that beautiful grin of his is now filled with teeth! He now has both top teeth, both middle bottom teeth, and a new bottom tooth just popped through yesterday. He’s getting so big, and I know that as soon as he has the space and opportunity, he’ll be crawling. He can get himself into a sitting position now, and can pull himself up to standing very easily. Sigh…it’s going waaay too fast.
Back to our trip though…today we are traveling alongside the spectacular Kluane Range- some of the prettiest, snow-peaked mountains you could imagine. There are several areas of highway improvement along our route today, new bridges being built and resurfacing due to incredible frost heaves. At times we have to follow a pilot car, which involves waiting for the pilot car, so the going is a little bit slower and a whole lot dustier! It’s worth it though, it’s such a beautiful stretch of road. We even saw brown more brown bears today, and this time were able to catch them on film!
